Our tour is devoted to the natural beauty and cultural history that shaped not only Virginia, but America. We’ll pay homage to the three cultures that came together and the land that bore their triumphs and defeats. We’ll make our way along the Colonial Parkway for a bike ride that follows the James River into Historic Jamestown. In May 1607, 104 Englishmen anchored their three small ships in the James River and came ashore at a place they named Jamestown, now preserved as part of the Colonial National Historical Park. They encountered the rich culture of the Native Americans who had been living on this land.

Enjoy the sights and smells of coastal Virginia—much of the island is wetland, including both swamp and marsh. We’ll bike the Island Drive loop, passing through forest views the Native people knew well, and that the early settlers encountered when they came ashore 410 years ago. Island Drive features a number of pullouts along the way at which we'll find interpretive signs describing life in the new world.  As we bike, we stay alert for wildlife, maybe even catching glimpses of deer, foxes, turtles, crabs, ospreys, and bald eagles. You have the option to shorten the bike tour and include a tour of the Visitors Center and the original fort site and New Towne.

Your tour will end with a voucher for a local beverage in celebration of the rich history and diversity of the birthplace of America.

$5 of each rider goes to support our conservation and community partners: Capital Trees, VCU Rice Rivers Center, and the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation.
